Red Lodge Montana: Authentic History Collides With a Modern Day Recreation!

By Ady Calow | Apr 17, 2009

Those who acquired real estate in Jackson. Wyoming in the year 1970’s and 1980’s are having good fortune nowadays. In fact, some of the nation’s wealthiest individuals purchased real estate in the area because of its beauty and proximity to Yellowstone National Park; the twenty-fold rise in values over the past 20 years has seen a huge bonus. This phenomenon happens also in Deer Valley, Breckenridge, Telluride and many of the Rocky Mountain’s more desirable locations. The mountain real estate in Red Lodge is still very undeveloped and undiscovered by Rocky Mountain standards. Red Lodge, Montana, the charming Victorian mining-era town, may be just the one of the best real estate investments of our time, rivaling that of Telluride, Vail, Aspen and Big Sky in the most recent era gone by. Take note. Butch Cassidy attempted a bank robbery here and the infamous Calamity Jane stayed at the Pollard Hotel.

Red Lodge Mountain was recently purchased by JMA Associates of San Francisco. They are planning to make major improvements to the resort, two of these are lift upgrades and to create more snow making capacity. The rebirth of the real estate businesses is beginning to show in this Montana town, while other U.S. resorts are struggling to get over a post-real estate boom hangover. For instance, a new $25 million hospital began construction in 2008, a new $9 million high school is completed, a new Red Lodge Ales brewery and Sam’s Tap Room opens in a month. Plus, numerous other commercial and residential developments are well under way.

The one million acre Absorka-Beartooth wilderness , which borders Red Lodge .contains all of Montana’s highest mountain peaks over 12,000 feet. Here is a great destination for all kinds of breathtaking adventures such as whitewater rafting, ice climbing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, kite skiing, snowmobiling , fly fishing and so much more. Red Lodge boasts the least expensive mountain real estate in the Rockies where both a ski resort and 18 hole golf course exist as amenities.

When architect Don McLaughlin is asked why Red Lodge real estate is so affordable, he just simply says, “That question won’t be asked for many more years as we expect to see prices rise.” McLaughlin is a member of the team that developed the Spires at Red Lodge. With his wife in the early 1980’s, McLaughlin cataloged all of the town’s historic structures helping to create the Red Lodge’s National Historic District.

The Spires develop Retirement Communities as one of the finest in Montana Bozeman

This small mountain town is hard to explain as it creates a crossroads between Victorian miner-era history and modern day recreational use of the Rockies. The town’s residents are an interesting mix of artists, ski bums, writers, and retirees from a wide variety of backgrounds. It’s often bewildering to those visiting from city’s when people they do not even know give them a friendly wave, but it is part of the authenticity here that is unique - like a throwback in time.
